Pump Won't Start

Why Won't My Well Pump Turn On?

A well pump that won't turn on is almost always electrical: a tripped breaker, a failed pressure switch, a bad capacitor or control box, or a burned-out motor. Reset the breaker once — if it holds, you're set; if it trips again immediately, stop. That points to the motor drawing too much current, and repeated resets make it worse. The switch and capacitor carry dangerous voltage, so that's where to call.

Common causes

What's Usually Causing It — Ranked Most to Least Common

  1. 01

    Tripped breaker (surge)

Storm or surge knocked it out. Reset once — if it holds, you're done.

  2. 02

    Failed pressure switch

Corroded or worn contacts; the switch never tells the pump to start.

  3. 03

    Bad capacitor or control box

Common on submersibles. The motor's fine but can't get the starting jolt it needs.

  4. 04

    Burned-out or seized motor

End-of-life failure. Often follows years of short-cycling or running dry.

  5. 05

    Trips immediately on reset

Motor over-current — a clear sign of internal failure. Stop resetting and call.

What to do — and when to call

Safe Checks You Can Do Yourself

Reset the breaker once. Holds and runs — done. Trips again right away — stop; repeated resets can worsen motor damage. The pressure switch and capacitor carry high voltage; leave those to us. Call and we'll diagnose whether it's a low-cost electrical part or the motor — and give you a detailed explanation and estimate before any work, the way our customers expect.

Anything beyond surface checks — pressure switch, 220V wiring, pulling a pump — is our job. Well systems carry high pressure and dangerous voltage; leave them to a licensed pro.

What it costs

Cost Context — National Ranges

A pressure switch or capacitor is a small repair. A failed control box is mid-range. A burned-out motor means pump replacement — see our cost guide for the honest range.

I got estimates from two other companies and learned a lot. Shayne came out and reviewed my situation himself — decades of experience, clearly knows his stuff. They use the highest-quality equipment.

Questions

Pump Won't Turn On — FAQ

Why does my breaker keep tripping when I reset it?

+
Almost always motor over-current — the pump is drawing more amps than it should because something inside is failing. Stop resetting (each cycle makes it worse) and call. We diagnose whether it's the motor, a stuck pump, or a wiring fault.

Is a pump that won't start always a replacement?

+
No. The motor itself is often fine — the failure is in the pressure switch, capacitor, or control box, all of which are repairs, not replacements. We diagnose before quoting so you don't pay for a new pump you didn't need.

How long should a well pump last?

+
A quality submersible pump installed correctly lasts 8–15 years, sometimes longer. Jet pumps are typically shorter. Cheap pumps, oversized systems, and short-cycling all cut that life short — we install premium parts that roughly double the lifespan of bargain replacements.

Pump Dead? We Diagnose Before We Quote.

Most no-start calls are an electrical part, not a new pump. You'll get a real diagnosis and a firm price before we touch anything.
